Flag of 1777

The first flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes. Betsy Ross of Philadelphia sewed the flag. She made the flag for General George Washington. He thought it would unit the people . This was during the Revolutionary War in 1776. The Revolutionary War gave us freedom from England. After the war we became a country of our own. The people were glad because the Revolutionary War was over. Now we have 50 stars . One for each of the 50 states.

The American flag is made up of many symbols. The 13 colonies became the 13 first states of the United States of America. The 13 stripes stand for the original 13 Colonies that later became the United States of America. The stripes are red and white. The red strips stands for bravery. The white stripe stands for goodness. The stars stand for each state The first flag had all the stars in a circle to show that they were all equal. The background behind the stars is blue. The blue stands for justice. We celebrate Flag Day June 14th because the first Congress adopted the "Stars and Stripes" as our national symbol on June 14, 1777.

Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner in 1814. This poem was written during another war. Francis Scott Key was on a boat and in the dawn he saw that our flag was still flying over Fort McHenry. This meant that we had won the battle. People began to sing his poem and it became our national anthem . We play if before all sports and important events.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892. We stand with our right hand over our hearts and recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in school. It shows that we are proud of our country.

George M. Cohan wrote the song You're A Grand Old Flag in 1906. It was because the world was at war and he wanted all the people to be proud of the American flag and the brave soldiers who were fighting for world peace.
